Tin
Metal essential to bronze, with limited sources, and so a candidate for economic control.
Sources
Tin is primarily mined as cassiterite, an oxide ore, in hydrothermal deposits. Some of these deposits formed in heavy, chemically reducing environments, and a typical deposit consists of cassiterite, stannous chloride, and granular gray tin.
Extraction
With low-tech extraction, yields are small. Cultures with a modest understanding of reducing chemistry get higher yields, but even then artisans understand that the tailings are still high in tin. This opens the door for a primitive magical-processing industry to capture all the metal.
