Pig Iron

Some holds can muster furnaces capable of getting near the forging temperatures for platinum, and those holds would also be capable of pouring pig iron. Pig iron is a mechanical oddity that has been observed but not fully researched.

The breakthrough would be large castings for more advanced machinery than the dwarves can currently imagine.
